The Story

Our client is a leading European metropolitan transport operator managing an underground network built and expanded over more than 50 years.

As generations of equipment from multiple vendors accumulated, operational complexity grew and data became fragmented across disconnected systems. To gain a unified, real-time view of its infrastructure and streamline operations, the operator partnered with Nagarro to implement and continuously evolve SCADA X-SIGHT, bringing assets, data, and workflows together on a single platform.

 

 

The challenge

A leading European metropolitan transport operator's underground network has grown steadily for more than 50 years. Individual assets can stay in service for up to 30 years, so many generations of equipment now run side by side, installed by different manufacturers as stations were built and modernized over time.

This created a highly heterogeneous landscape of controllers, sensors, and communication protocols. Data sat in isolated pockets, transparency suffered, and day-to-day operations demanded heavy manual effort. Faults risked being detected late, troubleshooting spanned multiple systems, and different teams needed different, tailored views of asset status, alarms, and process information, all while safety and availability requirements kept rising.

The solution

Nagarro adapted an existing solution to meet the operator's needs, going live in 2010 as SCADA X-SIGHT. Since then, it has been continuously enhanced, connecting new assets, integrating systems like SAP, and mapping new workflows as the network evolved. 

The platform centrally captures, evaluates, and visualizes operational data in real time, giving role-based, configurable interfaces to different user groups. Alarm and event management functions support fast prioritization, while standardized interfaces such as OPC UA, TCP/IP, and web services connect diverse assets and third-party systems into one consolidated environment. 

Electronic maintenance and fault forms extend this into daily operations, letting field teams document work digitally and feed it straight into ERP systems like SAP. A modular architecture keeps the platform adaptable as requirements evolve.

The outcome

With SCADA X-SIGHT in place, monitoring, control, and maintenance processes have become noticeably more efficient. Consolidated operational data gives the operator greater transparency across its technical assets, supporting faster, better-informed decisions during day-to-day operations. 

Automated alarm and analysis functions help teams respond faster to faults, contributing to reduced downtime, while continuous real-time monitoring supports condition-based and predictive maintenance. Standardizing data across assets and third-party systems has reduced manual workflows and made maintenance and service processes more efficient. 

The operator now has a platform that’s built not just for today's requirements, but to also support future extensions and digitalization initiatives, as the network continues to evolve
