Modernizing infrastructure effectively and seamlessly

How to 'Git’ to the root of the client’s problem before resolving it

challenge
The R&D Tools team provides GitLab to different divisions as a VCS and CI/CD solution. Initially, the Omnibus package based GitLab was hosted on an Amazon EC2 instance, aligning with the customer's needs at that time. However, the enrolment of more divisions has seen a significant increase in the number of users. Consequently, the higher usage of GitLab was causing performance issues. Code creation took more time and availability also became a problem. The client was keen to resolve these issues promptly and effectively.

solution
Nagarro collaborated closely with the client to meticulously plan a migration strategy, moving from Omnibus to HELM on Amazon EKS. S3 buckets were utilized for artifact storage, and PostgreSQL managed primary metadata. Kubernetes adoption ensured high availability, allowing scalable infrastructure without constraints. Infrastructure was managed using Terraform, with automated pipelines for one-click setup. SumoLogic centralized logging and monitoring for enhanced system visibility. PagerDuty enabled prompt issue alerts. Testing and verification in the DEV environment ensured smooth deployment within two days.

outcome
The Amazon EKS solution is highly available, scalable. It has significantly improved the DevOps metrics, particularly Mean Time to Recover, with no downtime observed in the infrastructure. With single-click infrastructure provisioning, we can create a new environment on-the-fly in no time. Upgrades, downgrades, and feature releases, which were scheduled to occur twice a month, have been automated within their defined pipelines. Automation has significantly reduced the time required and can be performed at any time without disrupting business operations.
