Logistics transformation with real-time, scalable integration

Using MuleSoft to break data silos and modernize logistics infrastructure

The story

A global freight and cargo, logistics, shipping, marine solutions provider relied on a legacy mainframe (CICS shipping system) and aging logistics tools built on file-based structures. Large data volumes and mixed formats led to delays, data corruption, financial losses, siloed data, and limited tracking and validation capabilities.

Nagarro implemented MuleSoft to integrate the ecosystem using REST APIs, file-based event triggers, and EDI, connecting systems such as CRM/CDM, order booking, ticketing, and bill of lading workflows. This solution also helped to integrate various disparate systems like CRM, CDM, order booking systems, ticketing systems, bill of leading systems, etc. This level of modernization and customization was made highly scalable with real-time and event-driven architecture’s fused together to create a foundation for a future-ready platform.

Challenges

  • Legacy mainframe CICS (shipping system) with aging logistics tools, relying on file-based event-driven structures to drive the business, large data volumes, and varied data formats (Flat, XML, EDI, JSON files).
  • Delays, data corruption, financial losses, isolated data silos, limited internal & external tracking capabilities, and often data validation issues.
  • Difficulty in tracking shipment as investigation required digging through multiple logs and disconnected systems.
  • Inability to expand the oceanic shipments and cater to multiple types of new shipments (cargo).

These system limitations resulted in poor operational experiences, delayed reconciliations, and limited scalability for digital transformation initiatives.

The solution

Nagarro implemented a scalable MuleSoft integration layer to centralize integrations and processes. The solution:

  • Wrapped legacy CICS systems to expose APIs for data exchange
  • Used custom Java in Mule apps to support exchanges beyond file/event-only interactions
  • Designed MuleSoft apps for peak volumes of 200 to 900+ TPM (transactions per minute) and multiple data formats via adapter-based service extensions.
  • Enabled secure hybrid integration between on-prem (files, databases, internal apps) and cloud systems (Salesforce, Oracle)
  • Automated event-driven workflows for data cleansing, sanitization, and enrichment to improve accuracy and tracking
  • Automated deployments using CI-CD are bundled with exhaustive testing, code coverage, and technical debt analysis as part of the deployment pipelines.

The outcome

This hybrid integrated solution combined the features of an adapter model and an event-driven, real-time architecture on a cloud-hosted platform. As a result, it significantly increased vendor EDI processing capacity, reduced debugging time, and brought deployment times down to under 20 minutes. It also boosted developer productivity and accelerated time-to-market for business and operations users’ requirements.

The solution:

  • Automated critical processes and reduced manual intervention for bank acknowledgments, payroll processing, automated billing/invoice creation, shipment segregation and tracking across all segments, vendor communication, and vendor onboarding (from 15 days to 3 days).
  • Provided a near-360-degree view of the package and container journey, including health status across various channels.
  • Enabled real-time visibility into logistics and finance for quicker, data-driven decision-making.
  • Standardized integrations to simplify operations, reduce maintenance overhead, and accelerate partner onboarding.

The client now operates on a scalable, future-ready platform that improves operational efficiency and enhances customer satisfaction.
