Modernizing enterprise data warehouse with Databricks

The client needed a platform to support emerging needs like IOT data ingestion and real-time insights flexibly. They sought consistent data quality, unhindered governance, reporting reliability, and quicker Cube refreshes. The new architecture had to scale as the business demands grew without risking performance and uptime.

Nagarro built a scalable and flexible Lakehouse architecture using Databricks’ Medallion pattern:  Bronze for raw data from operational databases and Iot-enabled vessels, Silver for organised Data Vault 2.0 models, and  Gold for curated Star schemas ready for BI tools like Power BI. We incrementally migrated Critical SSIS packages using Delta Live Tables to avoid disruption. A centralised semantic layer simplified cross-functional access to KPIs and metrics, while Unity Catalog introduced fine-grained access control, automated lineage tracking, and data masking. We also introduced query performance, monitoring frameworks, and Power BI dashboards. It is a modular and extensible solution that supports the integration of new data sources, including sensor streams from vessels, without major redesign.

The new architecture delivers structured, high-quality data that is easily accessible. A phased transition avoided downtime and aligned with the organization’s operational cadence. Monitoring frameworks track pipeline health and data quality end-to-end, while Power BI dashboards show real-time KPIs. Report refresh times dropped by 80% (from hours to minutes), data quality SLA compliance rose to 95%, and real-time dashboards improved time-to-insight by over 60%. The new platform achieved 99% pipeline uptime through automated retry logic. Compliance audits are now streamlined and automated. With a repeatable, governance-first platform, the company is ready to scale, adapt, and innovate faster.
