RFID-based pallet tracking to minimize asset loss and improve transparency

the story

Our client, one of the global leaders in beverage manufacturing and distribution, used wooden pallets to move beverages to multiple locations. The client envisaged replacing the existing wooden pallets with plastic pallets due to their longer life span and lower total cost of ownership. To ensure this low total cost of ownership, pallet losses had to be minimized. Hence, Nagarro developed an RFID-based pallet tracking solution for tracking inward and outward physical movements of pallets to ensure transparency on pallet utilization and location.

Our client used heterogeneous enterprise systems for managing customer orders, warehouse management, and logistics planning. As a result, delivery orders to different customers were not mapped to pallets, making the pallet tracking process manual and error prone. The lack of data on pallet movement also created difficulty in asset tracing across dozens of warehouses and customer locations.

We created an IoT-enabled RFID-based smart pallet tracking solution. In this solution, plastic pallets were embedded with RFID tags that could be read using handheld or fixed RFID readers. This ensured that each pallet was uniquely identifiable. The movement of pallets inside a warehouse and across different warehouses was tracked automatically and the results were visible on a dashboard. Our solution helps the client to track the location of pallets, obtain an accurate count of pallets within a warehouse or at a customer location, analyze pallets' utilization, and generate pallet data visibility via a dashboard.

Our solution helps the client to track and trace the pallets. It provides supply chain transparency with easy access to pallet information (count, location, utilization) via dashboards and customized reports. It delivers workforce efficiency by eliminating manual counting and verification processes for each stock transfer order. It also sets the base for the client’s long-term vision of end-to-end traceability of pallets and products.
