Replacing legacy systems with an easy-to-administer, scalable remote Azure Virtual Desktop Application

the story

In the energy business domain, the Powerlines Group acts as a general contractor. It offers a complete range of services from planning to installation and maintenance of medium-voltage, high-voltage, and extra-high voltage lines. They develop and sell products, components, and complete systems for electrification in local and long-distance transport, using a holistic development system. They run offices in Austria, Germany, UK, Benelux, & additional locations in Europe. The financial transactions were carried out from all locations via a central accounting software (BMD) hosted on their on-premises server. Due to the increased usage and a growing number of users (100+ users), the performance and efficiency of the employees were heavily impacted. Nagarro was onboarded to build a scalable remote desktop solution for employees working from anywhere.

A centralized transaction processing system hosted by an on-premises server had a negative impact on the performance and efficiency of the employees. A remote solution was needed to replace the legacy systems, ensure high user access, optimize administrative efforts and scalability even with large data volumes.

Nagarro recommended to develop an Azure Virtual Desktop application. Once implemented, the accounting software served as a remote app for around 120 users via a host pool. Any additional desktops/users can be provisioned at any time by IT within a few minutes via a versioned image from the Azure Shared Image Gallery. The legacy software required an SQL server in the backend, so the accounting application was migrated to the Azure Cloud. An application and database server were provided for high-performance access.

With our cloud-based remote desktop solution, Powerlines Group was able to provide its employees with high-performance applications and services throughout Europe, which is crucial in times of home office and remote working. With a simplified IT management system, they were able to reduce administrative efforts as well as optimize maintenance costs.
