A smart solution designed to automate feed generation for multiple partners.

the story

The client is a European broadcasting corporation that provides public broadcasting services and shares content via media RSS feeds through different partners to make it available on their platforms. Some of the partners include Apple TV, Google TV, Amazon Fire Stick, and more. Feeds were generated separately for each partner and for different categories. To cater to the requirements of multiple platforms, different data sources are needed. This content distribution system was outdated. Nagarro was chosen to design an automated solution to generate quality feeds regularly without manual intervention.

The Feed Generation System worked on manual scripts that needed to be run daily which made it inefficient. It was designed on complex and diverse technologies, which often led to a long onboarding process for new partners. Onboarding was not only tedious, but precarious, often impacting feeds for existing partners. If any changes/additions were needed, a significant amount of development effort was required, due to the complexity of the system.

Nagarro designed a GraphQL Java-based solution. Feeds for each of the partners are generated using metadata configuration files in an automated manner. The system is comprised of three components: feed scheduler, feed data engine and storage and feed component. The solution leverages GCP platform capabilities for benefits like scalability and maintainability. GraphQL made the data source integration easier. We also improved the error logging mechanism to identify issues and rectify them efficiently.

The new system automatically generates feeds daily at a scheduled time, without any human intervention. The stable and scalable infrastructure system has simplified the new partner onboarding process. The configurability of the system limited the amount of human intervention and the diverse manual skills required in Feed Generation. And a unified technology stack made integration with different data sources relatively easy.
