On the 27th of October, 47 runners (15 women and 32 men) from ...]]> After 250 grueling kilometers in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, Nagarro Software GmbH’s Brigid Wefelnberg, Business Coordinator and extreme runner, has broken her limits once again to place 3rd in what she calls one of the biggest challenges of her life.

On the 27th of October, 47 runners (15 women and 32 men) from all over the world stood at the start of the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme 250 km Ultramarathon on the South African border to Namibia, with everything – yes everything! – they needed to survive for the next 6 days on their backs. The organizer was only to supply them with water, tents for sleeping and medical support. The nervousness was palpable as the temperature reached 41 degrees Centigrade – even at only 10 am!

The 250 km were divided into 6 daily stages of between 30 to 80 kilometers.

Running a marathon on the street is one thing. It is another to run it through sand dunes, over rocky fields, climbing up and down cliffs, at temperatures of between 45 and 50 degrees – all of which there was plenty offered during these 6 exhausting stages.

“I had two world class women runners in front of me and 2 very strong women behind me, and of course I was competing with the men as well! I am very grateful to all of them, especially the 2 women in front of me for showing me where my potential still lies, as well as the 2 behind me who showed me how far I had already come. They all challenged me as I’ve never been challenged before!”, explains Brigid, who completed the entire 250 km in just under 46 hours.

Her strategy was not to linger at the water and control points, which are about 10 km apart, but to keep moving.

During these extreme races, runners sleep in big tents altogether. There are no showers, no toilets, no tables or chairs. Hot water is provided to the runners at the camps to prepare their freeze-dried meals, which is what most of their food consists of – all their food has to be carried in compact running backpacks, as well as their sleeping bag, mat, blister kit, emergency flare, snake bite set (yes, there are snakes!), and anything else the runners need to survive. An experienced desert Ultramarathon runner, Brigid was able to reduce the starting weight of her pack to 8 kgs – including 1.5 kgs water! “The only comfort” says Brigid, “is that the pack gets a bit lighter every day!”

“The most difficult stage was of course the night stage of over 80 km of absolute merciless terrain. These long stages in the desert typically take 14 to 20 hours due to the high temperatures during the day and the exhaustion in the night. I was able to cut off 2 whole hours of my normal 80 km time. I finished at midnight after just over 14 hours, which showed me that my hard training and many sacrifices had really paid off!”, exclaims Brigid.

After that, it was “just” a matter of completing the 44 and 24 km stages to the finish line. “These 2 stages are typically difficult after the 80 km stage. One is very tired after almost 200 kms and not sleeping properly.

Mental power plays an enormous role at these races – if you put your mind to finishing this madness, then nothing can stop you!” says Brigid, who crossed the finish line in just under a total of 46 hours, securing her the 3rd place on the podium.

We congratulate Brigid for her success at this prestigious international race. We wish her all the very best of willpower, endurance and focus for the toughest footrace on earth, the Marathon des Sables Morocco in April 2013, for which she will solely running for Nagarro Software and the Allgeier Group!
